Say what? /ˌstoʊ kəm ˈkwaɪ/

"We're delivering to where? Kwee, kay, queue, qway, key?"

How many times have those of us who live in Quy heard that?! We always say "It's Quy, Rhymes With Why" (well – Quy Not?) – or for the generation who remember the 50s film, you can think of Bridge On The River Kwai.

The name actually stems from "Cow Isle": say that quickly enough over and over again, and you'll start to hear why. It refers to the part of the village at the northern end around The White Swan pub.

The full name of the village (Stow-cum-Quy) comes from joining our settlement with Stow, which means "high" or "holy" place, appropriately located at the southern Church end – there's some good-natured joshing locally about which is the "Posh End" of the village. But please note, it is commonly accepted that you can call the whole village either Stow-cum-Quy or just Quy, but it is never, ever just Stow – which we think settles it. Google the name Quy and you'll find it is also a Vietnamese name meaning "precious" or "valuable". We couldn't agree more…
